How to Connect Wired Headphones to Your TV

You don’t only have to connect your headphones to your laptop!

1.    Through External Audio Devices

This is the easiest way to use wired headphones with your TV, but probably the least convenient. If your TV has a 3.5 mm headphone jack, all you need to do is simply plug your wired headphones into it. But here’s the thing, you won’t be able to watch TV from a comfortable distance, because wired headphones don’t have very long wires.

2.    Use Adapters

If you own a TV with RCA stereo outputs, simply buy an RCA-to-3.5 mm adapter and use it to connect your headphones to your TV. RCA audio is analog, just like an old pair of headphones with a 3.5 mm audio jack. But the main problem here is that you’ll be physically tethered to your TV. You must also be extra careful not to pull the cable or you’ll lose the connection.

3.    Connect to a Streaming Device’s Remote Control

Depending on the device you’re using with your TV, there are different ways to connect headphones to it. For instance, Roku 3 comes with a built-in headphone jack. You can plug in an old pair of headphones into the device’s remote and whatever you are watching will be transmitted to you.

Most of the gaming consoles also have similar features. Nintendo Wii U’s Gamepad comes with a built-in headphone jack as does PlayStation 4’s wireless controller. However, with the latter, you’ll have to access PlayStation 4’s settings and configure them to send audio to the controller’s headset.

How to Connect Wireless Headphones to Your TV

1.    How to Connect Infrared Wireless Headphones to TV

Infrared is typically used for short-range transmission—up to one meter—and can transport data at 16 Mbps (at most). It is the technology used for remote controls and some wireless TV headphones. However, the biggest shortcoming of this technology is that infrared receivers must have an unobstructed view of infrared transmitters so as to efficiently receive the signal.

Any obstacles will significantly affect the connection quality. In addition, infrared has a shorter connectivity range than Bluetooth. However, some people believe that infrared delivers better sound quality than Bluetooth.

2.    How to Connect Radio Frequency Wireless Headphones to TV

Radio frequency is the band used for broadcasting and communications transmission. The frequency has one advantage over Bluetooth: it can transfer audio in a range of up to 100 m. But it is not without faults. Because many electronic devices use radio frequency, the quality of the connection can be affected by devices such as mobile phones and microwaves. Devices that use the same frequency as radio frequency headphones (900MHz-3.2GHz) will interfere with the connection by causing noise.

3.    How to Connect Bluetooth Wireless Headphones to TV

Since there are so many Bluetooth devices out there, featuring different Bluetooth codecs, how do you connect your Bluetooth headphones to your TV?

There are two ways to go about it.

If you have a pair of Bluetooth headphones, but your TV doesn’t support Bluetooth, you can use a Bluetooth audio transmitter. This is a device you can plug into your TV audio output that allows for the transmission of audio through Bluetooth to your headphones. We recommend TaoTronics TT-BA01 as it offers a quick way to connect your wireless headphones to your TV.

If your TV has Bluetooth support, put your headset on pairing mode. You’ll notice a blue blinking dot next to the Bluetooth icon to show that it is in pairing mode. Also, be sure to enable the Bluetooth function in your TV settings.

Pros and Cons of Bluetooth/RF/Infrared Connection

Bluetooth

Pros Cons
It is more stable than infrared
and radio frequency
It doesn’t allow long-range
communication between
devices
There’s no interference by
other wireless devices
Its transmission speed is slow compared to infrared and RF
Multiple devices can easily
communicate with each other
It has a lower bandwidth
than Wi-Fi
There are virtually no
compatibility issues, so you can change your headphones any time you want

Radio Frequency

Pros Cons
It has a very long
transmission range
Interference by other radio waves can be a problem
There is no delay in audio as radio waves move at a speed of 300000km/s You must put your TV in a room with
no other RF devices
Setup does not take a lot of
time
Radio frequency headphones are not compatible with other audio devices like smartphones and PCs

Infrared

Pros Cons
It is more secure compared
to radio frequency technology
Due to line-of-sight technology,
your headphones and the TV must have no obstruction between them during transmission
There is hardly any delay in audio as the transmission rate is fast The connectivity range is very short,
usually no more than 5m and
closer to 1m

Tips for Connecting Bluetooth Headphones to TV

1.    The Headphones and the Transmitter Must Both Feature Bluetooth Aptx with Low Latency

If you want to know the nitty-gritty of how to connect your TV to Bluetooth headphones, we have the answers you’re looking for.

There are a myriad of Bluetooth transmitters and transceivers (devices that can transmit and receive digital signals) on the market. But if you truly want to have a great TV experience, you must choose those featuring Bluetooth aptX low latency codec. Bluetooth aptX will not be enough.

AptX low latency is a Bluetooth codec by Qualcomm that ensures Bluetooth wireless-enabled devices deliver sound in sync with visual media. It minimizes delay and enhances end-to-end speed of audio transmission, leading to a synchronized, high-quality user experience.

Devices that support this codec will ensure that the audio remains synchronized with the video, and that there’s no delay between what you see on the TV and what you hear on your headphones.

If your Bluetooth headphones don’t support aptX low latency, you can get those that do, like TaoTronics Bluetooth headphones. They ensure there’s no sound delay and that you have an awesome TV experience. But there’s one important thing—your TV must also support this codec.

Some Bluetooth headphones don’t support aptX low latency, which is a must if you want to steer clear of annoying sound delays.

2.    Resolve Bluetooth Audio/Video Sync

When you’re using your Bluetooth headphones to watch TV, you may discover that at times the audio and video don’t match. The audio soundtrack may be ahead of the corresponding images. The major cause of this problem is that audio is processed much faster than video, especially 4K or high-definition video.

These video resolutions consume a lot of space and take longer to process than standard resolution video signals and audio formats. If your TV performs a lot of processing on the incoming signal, the audio and video will be out of sync and the audio will arrive before the video.

Depending on the make of your TV, tools may be provided to deal with this issue—or there may be steps you can take that enable you to solve audio video sync issues.

Go to your TV’s settings and disable video-processing settings such as noise reduction, motion enhancement, and picture-enhancement features. If disabling the TV’s video processing features doesn’t solve the situation, or having them on is important to you, check the settings in your TV’s operating menu and look for terms like audio delay, lip sync, or audio sync.

Click on the terms used and look for settings that delay or slow down the arrival of the audio signal to ensure the audio soundtrack and the image on the screen match. The settings typically range between 10 milliseconds and 240 milliseconds. Even a 100 milliseconds delay can be very noticeable.

  1. Dear sirs,
Have just purchased your advertised TAOtronics wireless transmitter.
Could you tell me how to connect to a television?

    1. Hi David

Please check the audio output port in your TV, usually there are 3 types:

      a. optical output:
use the optical cable that comes with the product, connect one side to the TV’s optical output, the other side to the transmitter’s optical input. (this feature is only available on TT-BA09 and TT-BA014, please check your model!)

      b. RCA output:
use the RCA male to 3.5mm female cable and 3.5mm audio cable that come with the product, connect the 2 cables. Then connect the RCA male to the TV’s RCA output, the other side to transmitter’s 3.5mm input.

      c. 3.5mm output
use the 3.5mm cable that comes with the product, connect one side to the TV’s aux output, the other side to the transmitter’s 3.5mm input

      Hope this helps!

  4. I have a TT-BA09 wireless adapter that I bought about three months ago. It is connected to my TV set. Until recently, it worked perfectly with my Bluetooth wireless headphones. However a couple of weeks ago it evidently developed a problem that prevents my headphones connecting to my TV set. I tried the reconnect scheme in the user manual countless times with no luck. My headphones work with my laptop and my cell phone, however. Has anybody encountered a similar problem?

    1. Hi, when the transmitter is connected to the audio output of the TV, the TV speaker will be mute and the sound will only be transmitted to the headphones via Bluetooth.
